Microsoft over the weekend relayed some good news for folks running older versions of Windows. It turns out that there will be a way for people still running Windows XP or Windows Vista to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Previously, it was believed that only Windows 7 and Windows 8 users would be eligible for the free upgrade.
Here’s how it all works.
Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 can be a chore. Windows 7 will not automatically upgrade from XP, which means that you have to uninstall Windows XP before you can install Windows 7. And yes, that’s just about as scary as it sounds. Moving to Windows 7 from Windows XP is a one-way street. An upgrade moves your PC from a previous version of Windows — such as Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 — to Windows 10. An upgrade can take place on your existing device, though Microsoft recommends using Windows 10 on a new PC to take advantage of the latest features and security improvements. Did you know that Windows XP is more likely to be the target of data thieves once Microsoft support for this product ends on April 8, 2014? Follow these five easy steps to upgrade your system to Windows 8.1. Use the automatic Windows upgrade assistant to find out if your device(s) meet the Windows 8.1 minimum hardware requirements. Windows XP won’t be officially supported for much longer. Sure, you could keep using it — it won’t just stop working one day. It will just become more insecure over time as Microsoft and everyone else stops supporting it. Jul 27, 2016 If your entire business is going to grind to a halt because you can’t run an old application on Windows XP, you can still upgrade your computer to a more modern operating system. This is why Windows 7 — the Professional version, at least — contains Windows XP mode, which allows you to run applications in a special Windows XP system. Essentially, your computer will run an isolated copy of Windows XP.

In a recent post on its Windows Blog, Microsoft effectively writes that users running Windows preview builds as part of the Windows Insider Program will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. This is certainly welcome news for DIY types looking to run a clean install without having to fork over either $109 for Windows 10 Home or $149 for Windows 10 Professional.
WinBetawrites:
Microsoft has claimed in the past that users upgrading from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will receive Windows 10 for free, however that was never the case for Windows Insiders who installed clean. Microsoft consistently said that you would need an existing Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license to get activated on Windows 10, but now that seems to have changed.
To get in on the action, Windows Insider users must be running the most up-to-date preview release of Windows 10 (build 10130). Once the final version of Windows 10 goes live, these users will be able to download and install it for free.
